Can Column Formaldehyde Observations Inform Air Quality Monitoring Strategies for Ozone and Related Photochemical Oxidants?

چکیده

Formaldehyde column density (ΩHCHO) showed a potentially useful correlation with surface ozone during the LISTOS campaign on Long Island Sound and KORUS-AQ in Seoul, South Korea. This builds previous work that identified this relationship from situ aircraft observations similar findings for ground-based airborne remote sensing of ΩHCHO. In region, ΩHCHO exhibited strong temporal (r2 = 0.66) spatial 0.73) correlation. The variability (∼1 Dobson units [DU]) was larger than range average (∼0.1 DU). is most informing monitoring strategies, demonstrating challenge using satellite data sets purpose. high levels NO2 resulted Ox better correlating due to titration effects. ΩHCHO–Ox may therefore reflect sum related photochemical oxidants, relevant air quality standards set regulate quantity such as U.S. EPA National Ambient Air Quality Standard (NAAQS). shifted Seoul need evaluate over longer time periods. With sufficient precision future retrievals, could be evaluating adequacy strategies.

Improved model of isoprene emissions in Africa using Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) satellite observations of formaldehyde: implications for oxidants and particulate matter

We use a 2005–2009 record of isoprene emissions over Africa derived from Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) satellite observations of formaldehyde (HCHO) to better understand the factors controlling isoprene emission in the continent and evaluate the impact on atmospheric composition. OMI-derived isoprene emissions show large seasonality over savannas driven by temperature and leaf area index (L...

MODIS and OMI satellite observations supporting air quality monitoring.

Within the framework of air quality monitoring, measurements by Earth-observing satellite sensors are combined here with regional meteorological and chemical transport models. Two satellite-derived products developed within the QUITSAT project, regarding significant pollutants including PM(2.5) and NO(2), are presented. Estimates of PM(2.5) concentrations at ground level were obtained using mod...

Validation of Ozone Monitoring Instrument total ozone column measurements using Brewer and Dobson spectrophotometer ground- based observations

[1] In this paper we present validation results of the total ozone column data products of the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) on board the NASA EOS-AURA satellite through comparisons with ground-based observations by Dobson and Brewer spectrophotometer instruments. Quality-controlled and archived total ozone column data from these ground-based instruments located at stations worldwide have b...

Interpreting satellite column observations of formaldehyde over tropical South America.

Space-borne column measurements of formaldehyde (HCHO), a high-yield oxidation product of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), represent important constraints for quantifying net regional fluxes of VOCs. Here, we interpret observed distributions of HCHO columns from the Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment (GOME) over tropical South America during 1997-2001. We present the first comparison of year-...

Air mass factor formulation for spectroscopic measurements from satellites Application to formaldehyde retrievals from the Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment

We present a new formulation for the air mass factor (AMF) to convert slant column measurements of optically thin atmospheric species from space into total vertical columns. Because of atmospheric scattering, the AMF depends on the vertical distribution of the species. We formulate the AMF as the integral of the relative vertical distribution (shape factor) of the species over the depth of the ...
